‘Cuba Tropical’ is the name of a Latin music group which plays traditional and modern cuban music (son cubano, salsa, timba, chachacha, bolero, mambo, rumba, afrocuban, guaracha), other Latin rhythms (merengue, cumbia, bachata) and also Latin-jazz. Music is orchestrated according to the Cuban style, and performed with the same energy and flavor. It is ideal for strong, energetic nights with a Latin flavor, but at the same time for a romantic Caribbean atmosphere. The group's program contains many songs by "Buena Vista Social Club" like: El Cuarto de Toula, Candela, Bilongo, Chan Chan etc. and many other famous songs like: Carnaval, Oye Como Va, Guantanamera, Hasta Siempre Comandante (Che Guevara), Suavemente, Besame Mucho, Historia de un Amor etc.
Christos Morfitis studied piano and theory since he was five. He continued studying music in the U.K. (1998-2001) were he studied jazz piano, jazz harmony, composition etc. He obtained his Bachelors (Hons) in music APU Cambridge. He then went to the CENSEA College of Music, Havana-CUBA, where he studied latin jazz, latin popular, afrocuban, piano, singing, percussion etc. He also took private lessons with Chuchito Valdez, Roberto Fonsequa (of Buena Vista Social Club), Pedro Idurralte, Antres Alen (of “Irakere”), and Orlando Sánchez. In Cyprus he worked with many professional musicians in many occasions, he has a full and active life in the music world of Cyprus, and he created the group ‘Cuba Tropical’, through which he expresses himself musically and keeps leading into new musical adventuras.
Marinos Neophytou studied music from young age. He then went to the USA were he studied jazz and Latin-jazz at Berklee (Boston). He came back to Cyprus at 1992. As a jazz performer, he played with all Cypriot jazz musicians in many concerts. He is a multitalented musician; He plays a range of instruments like guitar, bass, saxophone, drums, piano and many others. The last five years he is into cuban music and Latin-jazz.
Constadinos Paouros was born in Limassol at 1976. He started drums at the age of twelve. At 1997 he went to Athens were he studied drums and percussion (with specialty in Latin-jazz) in Nakas School of Music. At 2005 he went to Cuba for two months were he took lessons of afrocuban percussion. He plays drums, percussion and piano. He now teaches drums and percussion in Cyprus.
The year 2004 was when Christos returned to Cyprus with his wife BrisMaida Cadrelo Morfiti (Professor (Dr) of Dance - graduated from ISA Conservatory of Art in Havana - Cuba). They immediately started planning and forming "Cuba Tropical". Christos, Marinos and Contandinos are musicians with a long and active participation in the music life of Cyprus, and with similar taste in music, so it was only natural that they would join forces, into making "Cuba Tropical" a reality. This group, unique in its kind in Cyprus, first appeared in 2005 and since then performed in concerts and shows all over Cyprus, appeared on the TV art program "Entehnos" twice and has a dominant position in the music life of Cyprus. It can combine music and dancing and it has followers not only from the Latin-dance area, but also people that just like to listen and cannot resist the energy and flavor of Latin music and of the group.
